Avoid Revealing Your Phone Number on Facebook

Facebook is one of the most used social media platforms on the internet. Users share personal information on their profiles to better connect with family and friends around them. What they do not realise is that their profiles are goldmines for information thieves and stalkers. If your phone number is publicly available on Facebook, unsuspecting individuals can take your phone number to do a phone number lookup. This will then reveal private information about you which will then be sold to third-party companies without your consent.

Facebook might already have your phone number with you realizing it. The Facebook smartphone app will repeatedly ask you to confirm your phone number for security or authentication reasons. You might have mistakenly added your phone number for these confirmations just to remove the message.Consequently, when you have added your phone number into Facebook you are able to update your privacy options. However, the choices available are sharing the number with Friends, Friends of Friends, or Everyone but there is no “Only Me” option.

Fortunately, you can check if your phone number is on Facebook and proceed to remove it from its database. Navigate yourself to the top right side of your profile page, click the down arrow and pick Settings from the drop-down menu. Next, select General from the side menu and you can see your phone number listed in the Contact tab. From here you can adjust who can search for you by clicking the Privacy tab from the page and adjusting your preferred setting for “Who can look you up by phone number”.

If you have other social media accounts registered on the internet, be sure to visit them again and adjust your privacy settings accordingly. With this, you have taken another step in controlling where your private information is distributed.
